CFD Stuff At the Turbulence Simulation and Modelling Laboratory (TSM Lab) Professor Piomelli and his collaborators are developing new methodologies to enable the analysis and prediction of turbulent flows, and applying these methods to study the physics of turbulence in real-life applications. Among the subjects of his work are: the turbulent flows over hydraulic turbine blades damaged by corrosion (in collaboration with Hydro Quebec) [1-3]; the study flow over airfoils contaminated by ice (in collaboration with Bombardier Aerospace); turbulent wall jets [4]; the flow field generated by a helicopter hovering near the ground (supported by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research) [5]; the flow over the pectoral fins of humpback whales [6].
