The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL) was formed by a consortium of four Ontario universities, Carleton University, Queen's University, the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Ottawa, and has expanded to also include Ryerson University, Loyalist College and Seneca College. The facilities consist of one the largest of Sun Microsystems based academic research installations in the world located in Kingston, a Beowulf cluster installed at Carleton University and work-up facilities located at Carleton, RMC, the University of Ottawa and Seneca. It is a $160 million project with funding from agencies and/or programs of the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and Industry. HPCVL is a Sun Microsystems Center of Excellence and is participating in the formation of the National Platform for research using HPC.
The Associate Director will be primarily responsible for coordinating the operational activities, as well as, the supporting infrastructure for HPCVL. The Associate Director will help manage the relationships between HPCVL's member institutions at the operational level and the interactions of HPCVL with technology providers. The Associate Director will help ensure that computing resources are available for pioneering work in areas such as bioinformatics, drug design, computational fluid dynamics, polymer science, applied parallel computing, economics and psychology which are carried out using HPCVL's resources. In addition, the Associate Director will help interface with aspects of the National Platform and Compute Canada. The Associate Director will report to the Executive Director of HPCVL.
This is a challenging position in a fast-paced, highly technical environment and the successful candidate will have leadership and management skills typically acquired through work experience in an industrial/university/government environment at a management level. Post-graduate education in an area of computational science or other related field is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively in both official languages would be an asset. This is a one year contract position (potentially renewable). The position is located at Queen's University and the hiring salary, based on relevant experience, will be in the range of $72,075 to $84,087.
