HPCVL Workshops, HPCVL is offering two workshops in OpenMP/MPI and NAG LIbrary at the University of Ottawa and Queen's University on Nov. 3-7, 2008. Please see details here
HPCVL Announces Major Hardware Expansion
HPCVL is pleased to announce the installation of eight Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 systems. Each system has sixty-four 2.52 GHz quad-core SPARC 64 chips and 2 TB of RAM. The cluster has a TPP of over 20 TFLOPS of performance and will help researchers tackle new problems currently out of reach. For more information, check out our hardware page or Sun's website.
HPCVL Newsletter
The latest edition of HPCVL Labnotes is now available. Please check out the Current Volume or past volumes.
HPCVL Scholarships
The September 2008 HPCVL/Sun scholarship call has now closed. Thank you for your interest in HPCVL, and to all the applicants. Please note that the next call will be for January 2009, with a deadline of November 28, 2008. Please see the list of scholarship recipients here.
HPCVL Expands Again
HPCVL is pleased to announce the availability of our new Victoria Falls cluster. This cluster is based on Sun Microsystems 1.2GHz UltraSPARC T2+ processors which have eight CPU cores and each core capable of running eight "threads" simultaneously. This is an exciting development as it is the first massively Chip Multithreaded (CMT) installation for research in Canada and is a paradigm shift. Altogether there are approximately 10,000 threads available. For details see the: HPCVL Victoria Falls Cluster page.
HPCVL Outreach Program
"The Virtual Lab" Outreach Program. HPCVL has developed an online resource for Ontario educators teaching math and sciences in the upper elementary and secondary grades. The website provides great resources, matched to the Ontario curriculum, that can be used by teachers to enhance lesson plans, and to encourage students to consider post-secondary education and careers in these areas. www.thevirtuallab.org
HPCVL is Hiring, HPCVL is seeking a full-time Associate Director. Please see posting for more details.
HPCVL Continues to Virtualize Research
The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory announced the launch of its Secure Grid Portal (SGP). Read the Press Release here (pdf) or (.doc)...

HPCVL Adds Fluent Licenses,
HPCVL has recently increased the number of Fluent licenses. The new license agreement covers 50 program runs plus 200 parallel processes, which is more than twice the previous count. Please check out the details here.
Secure Grid Portal and Access,
HPCVL is requiring that all new users access
central site resources through the HPCVL Secure Portal. Current
users are encouraged to move to these resources as soon as possible.
In time, we will be disabling ssh logins for general users.
Note that while remote workup systems are currently only available via ssh,
they will also be moved to Portal only access in the coming months.
Information on the HPCVL Secure Portal and how to obtain a digital certificate (required) may be obtained here.
New Fluent License / Grid Engine scheme
Please note that we have introduced a new scheme to manage the available Fluent licenses for Fluent jobs that were submitted by Grid Engine. Click here for details.
Configuring Your Environment,
Logins on the new compute grid can take advantage of a default rich environment. Access to new packages and customizations can be added with just a single command. Please read more here.
Important Reminder , Please remember that all production jobs that are run on the cluster must be submitted via Grid Engine. Test jobs and compilations et al may still be run outside of Grid Engine on Node 0. Adherence to this policy helps ensure system stablility and efficiency. Please read this notice for details.
HPCVL Working Template v5.3
The current version of the HPCVL Working Template (HWT) is v5.3.
The HWT provides an advanced toolkit for the parallelization of
code, including Version Maintainance, Automatic Relative Debugging,
and Simple Timing. The software may be accessed directly on our
Sunfire cluster at /opt/hwt, which also contains an
application example. The User's Manual can be downloaded here.
